Building a Culture of Belonging through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace - Adrian's Insights

Recently, Adrian Cropley, founding partner of the CSCE was featured in a Haiilo article, with other experts, to share their thoughts on why Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) matters in the workplace.

In the article, Adrian emphasises the pivotal role of leaders in creating a culture of DEI within organisations. Effective leadership in DEI goes beyond words; it calls for actions and behaviours that embody inclusion. Given that a significant portion of communication is non-verbal, Adrian states that leaders must ensure their actions align with the inclusive messages they are sending. This includes practical measures such as bias training, diverse hiring panels, policy reviews for equity, and implementing mentorship programs. These things solidify a leader's commitment to DEI, ultimately fostering trust, respect, and innovation within the organisation.

If you'd like to learn more about inclusive communication, CSCE partner Ann-Marie Blake is offering a virtual course called: How to Make Your Communication Inclusive and Accessible.

A Strategic Interview with Sia Papageorgiou

Lateefah Jean-Baptiste recently interviewed Sia, and the conversation was published on Strategic's website. Strategic is an online public relations and professional communication magazine for industry experts and business leaders.

In the article, Sia underscores the importance of strategic communication. Initially aspiring to journalism, Sia found her true passion in communication through her work in the charity sector. As managing partner at the Centre for Strategic Communication Excellence, she advocates for communication professionals to prioritise strategic over tactical approaches. Instead of focusing so heavily on outcomes like “I need a newsletter” Sia urges clients to ask why? Why this, and why now?

She notes that there is a gap between perceived and actual understanding of strategic internal communication, emphasising the need for improved education and training. She believes that strategic communication should be integrated into the core business strategy rather than as an afterthought.

Sia also discusses the potential of AI in enhancing strategic communication, stressing the importance of ethical use. She champions continuous training and certification to elevate the profession's credibility.

Her closing advice to communication professionals? Focus on the purpose and audience of your work and align your efforts with broader business goals to drive impactful change.

If you want to learn more about responsible AI usage, the CSCE has an informative guide: "Responsible AI for the Communication Profession." This resource is tailored to communication professionals and offers detailed insights on ethically using AI.

The CSCE also holds a regular AI Forum where Adrian Cropley and Ingrid Nienaber-Dickens facilitate lively discussions on the topic.
