    Giving Artificial Intelligence a Voice

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has unveiled its newest generative AI tool, which can easily replicate human voices.

The new tool, called Voice Engine, only requires a 15-second sample of someone’s voice, to produce an impressive-sounding AI version. Users can then type in what they would like the AI to say, and it will read it in a synthesised voice.

While several AI voice generators exist, most need a longer sample than the 15-second requirement of Voice Engine to produce something that sounds convincing.

However, the ease with which Voice Engine can mimic a person's voice using a brief audio snippet raises significant ethical concerns such as authentic generated voices being used to spread misinformation.

This could also lead to more convincing scams, such as the ongoing scam using AI-generated voices to impersonate loved ones to extort ransom money.

As communication professionals, we must stay informed and vigilant regarding technological advancements that can result in the spread of disinformation.

If you’re interested in learning more about responsible AI usage, we encourage you to explore our Responsible AI for the Communication Profession guide.

LinkedIn Testing New Short-Form Video Features

TikTok popularised short-form video content, with Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube quickly following suit through features like Instagram and Facebook Reels, as well as YouTube Shorts. Now, it seems LinkedIn is also joining the trend by experimenting with short-form videos.

Lindsey Gamble reports that LinkedIn is currently doing a limited beta test of a specialised short-form video experience on its iOS app. Members with access will notice a new video tab, where they can browse through these short videos.

This new feature will allow professionals to show off their abilities and expertise in a new way.

GCCC Seeks Candidates to Serve on Council

At the Centre for Strategic Communication Excellence, we’re passionate about two things – strategic communication and standards of professionalism. Which is why we think it’s important for you to keep reading.

Research conducted by the GCCC in 2023 found that 68% of respondents (350+ communication professionals) believe it’s important for communication professionals to be credentialed.

We agree. So, if you believe in certification for communication professionals, this is your opportunity to make a difference. The Global Communication Certification Council has several openings for the next term. Applications are being taken through April 21, 2024.

The GCCC's purpose is to create a unified, global credentialing process for communication professionals at different milestones in their careers and to provide a pathway for achieving and maintaining that certification. If you have five years of experience in communication management or expertise in credentialing, please consider joining. Membership in a specific professional organization is not required.

    ·        Secretary/Treasurer two-year term
    ·        1 council member three-year term
    ·        1 industry stakeholder two-year term
    ·        1 industry stakeholder one-year term

    Qualifications:
