An Exploration of Women's Mental Health
|
The Liptember Foundation wrote an incredibly powerful article highlighting women’s mental health in 2024 and the challenges they are facing. They state that Australian women are grappling with a range of mental health challenges, with depression, anxiety, and body image issues leading the pack. Here are the five most prevalent mental health issues among Australian women in 2024: • Depression (46%) • Anxiety and generalized anxiety disorders (41%) • Body image issues (29%) • Psychological distress (16%), and • Post-traumatic stress disorder (14%) The pressures of work are taking a serious toll, with 40% of working women saying their mental health has worsened in the past year due to job demands. The main culprits? Burnout (58%), the relentless mental load (54%), and the constant juggling act of balancing work, life, and family (43%). Interestingly, despite the widespread challenges, only 48% of women sought help for their mental health struggles this year. Young women in particular are facing significant pressures—48% of girls aged 14-19 are dealing with body image issues, and many are also struggling with social phobias, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts.
