The Evolution of AI in Strategic Communication: Exploring the Opportunity

    By Adrian Cropley

In the ever-evolving landscape of strategic communication, the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a pivotal evolution, reshaping how messages are crafted, disseminated, and evaluated. This in-depth exploration seeks to unravel the myriad ways in which AI is not just complementing but significantly enhancing the roles of communication professionals, ushering in an era of unprecedented efficiency and personalisation. Let’s embark on a journey of integrating AI in strategic communication.

A New Dawn for Strategic Communication

The incorporation of AI into strategic communication heralds a new dawn, transitioning from conventional, manually intensive processes to automated, intelligent systems. The evolution of AI from a nascent technology to a cornerstone of modern communication strategies epitomises a shift towards more dynamic, responsive, and personalised engagement of our audiences. As we navigate this transition, understanding the role of AI becomes imperative for communication professionals seeking to leverage its potential to streamline processes and forge deeper connections with their audience. It is a dance between humans and machines that must be in sync.

    Automating Routine Tasks

The adage “time is money” holds unparalleled significance in strategic communication. Automating routine tasks is a testament to AI’s transformative power; most of us have already discovered that. By delegating repetitive and time-consuming activities to AI, such as email filtering, social media management, writing suggestions and corrections and content development, communication professionals can reallocate their time towards strategic planning, creative development, and human oversight to editing and training. This shift augments productivity and enhances job satisfaction as individuals engage in more meaningful, valuable and fulfilling work.

As we embrace this new era of AI-integrated strategic communication, understanding its transformative potential is key. To dive deeper into the many ways AI is reshaping our industry, click the button below to read the full article.

The Role of Communication in Maintaining Employee Trust During Change

Haiilo recently published an article featuring Sia Papageorgiou, and CSCE partner Mike Klein among other experts, which discusses the role of internal communication during organisational changes.

It’s clear that open, transparent, and effective communication is paramount in maintaining employee trust during change.

An Update on Global Artificial Intelligence Safeguards

The European Union recently passed groundbreaking legislation aimed at regulating AI usage, marking a pivotal step toward ensuring safe and ethical AI development.

However, what measures are being taken elsewhere in the world?

Researchers at Gladstone AI have outlined a comprehensive plan, commissioned by the U.S. Department of State, to enhance the safety and security of advanced AI. Their report highlights two primary concerns regarding AI's potential threats to humanity.

    • The first concern is that an AI system could become so intelligent that it may engage in power-seeking behaviours, where the system tries to prevent itself from being shut off or having its primary goals altered (Terminator, anyone?).
    • The second concern is that AI could be trained to commit major cyberattacks, such as large-scale denial of service attacks (locking individuals or businesses out of their computers).

The plan details a series of urgent actions countries can take to prevent these catastrophic outcomes.

If you want to learn more about responsible AI usage, the Centre for Strategic Communication Excellence has just launched our latest guide: "Responsible AI for the Communication Profession."
