To say that the world’s values are under a microscope at this point in the history of humankind, is an understatement. Every day we see hatred, bigotry, half-truths, lies, alternative facts and fake news. People are being manipulated by world leaders who appear to no longer stand for truth, honesty, freedom and justice for all.
We asked our global faculty what advice they would give to world leaders. Here’s what they said:
Mary Hills ABC, IABC Fellow
The world is in the midst of change and we are lucky to be alive and have a role in this transition. As we traverse this transition, we need leaders who are authentic and understand how to make those who fear change, believe we make a better, more sustainable world. Be that leader!
Amanda Hamilton-Attwell ABC, IABC Fellow
People demand to be provided with consistent and accurate information. Your stakeholders will verify facts and they will argue your views; be prepared to have robust conversations. These conversations require that you are as “fluent” in the language of social media as you are in the language of print, broadcast and televised media. Each one requires a different conversation with a different group of people. Be a competent conversational communicator.
Adrian Cropley OAM, FRSA, ABC
Speak the truth no matter how hard or unpopular it is. Back up the truth with real facts, not skewed facts that mislead your audience. If you make a mistake apologise and correct the error without hesitation or blame. Most importantly communicate to others in a way you’d like to be communicated with. And if you’re seeking my advice to spin the message, manipulate the audience, or present the facts in alternate ways, you have two options: 1) Take my advice 2) Seek someone else’s advice.
Sia Papageorgiou FRSA
Trust is something that must be earned and communication is the key to building that trust. Firstly, your communication must be sincere and transparent and you must always do as you say. Secondly, leave your ego at the door and connect with people by understanding what matters to them. Citizens of the world have become increasingly cynical so stop focusing on ‘having’ trust and start focus on ‘building’ it.
Claire Watson ABC, MC
Choose your words carefully for they have the power to inspire and the power to destroy. Be mindful of your actions, for you will be judged on whether what you say matches what you do, and whether you act for the greater good or simply to line your own pockets and those of your supporters. Always remember that the decisions you make impact people, their livelihood and their way of life. This fact alone is equally a great honour and a great responsibility. Choose wisely, keeping people at the core of every decision you make.
Martha Muzychka ABC, MC
Speak the truth. Behave ethically. Treat everyone with respect and dignity. Embrace change and the power of creativity. Remember we have two ears and two eyes, and only one mouth. Listen more and speak less.
Cyrus Mavalwala ABC, MC
We speak different languages and enjoy different customs, but it’s precisely this diversity that makes us strong together. The world’s people are passionate and resilient, but their trust and support will only be earned through open, authentic leadership.
